Today it's the first day of the one-day international (ODI) between India and New Zealand, and ace cricketer Shikhar Dhawan gave India a decent start to the series.
Dhawan scored 72 runs off 77 balls, including 13 boundaries. He shared a 124-run stand with Shubman Gill for the first wicket to give Team. Gill made 50 off 65 balls and was the first to fall.
With Shikhar’s opening performance in the international ODI fans were impressed with his batting performance and hailed the opener for his good form.
Social media is filled with messages and applause for the cricketer.
Though things for Dhawan haven’t been all fair.
Dhawan, who is a left-handed batter has been leading the Indian Cricket team in absence of Rohit Sharma. This year also he was supposed to lead the Men in blue for the ODI series, but at the last minute, KL Rahul came back into the side, having recovered from his injury, and he was then made the captain.
He had earlier captained during the West Indies ODI series, and then the home ODI series against South Africa (Dhawan had also led Team India last year during the away Sri Lanka series when the main side was in England). He was also named captain of the Zimbabwe series as well.
When Dhawan was asked how he felt when he was removed as the captain for the Zimbabwe series at the last minute, ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand. He said during the pre-match press conference,” "You have asked a good question. I consider myself fortunate that I am getting an opportunity to lead the side at this stage of my career. I feel good about it and it is a challenge. We have won good series with a young side. If I talk about the Zimbabwe tour, KL Rahul is the vice-captain of our main team, when he came back, I was mindful of the fact that he had to go to Asia Cup. If Rohit had gotten injured during Asia Cup, then KL might have been asked to lead.
