The image is a visual representation in the form of a Scatter plot showing how Serie A Midfielders classified as MFs & MFDFs on the FBRef website, who have played between 10-19 90s this season perform in terms of progressing the ball and securing it.
Progression in this case is measured by Progressive Actions per 90 minutes which is a result of the Progressive Passes & the Progressive Ball Carries that the Midfielders make throughout the course of the 90 minutes.
And Security in this case is measured by Turnovers per 90 minutes. The lesser the turnovers, the better the players are in terms of securing the ball & not losing it.
These metrics can be calculated using the following formulae (all stats per 90 toggled):
Progressive actions = progressive passes + progressive carries
Turnovers = failed passes ( which is Total Attempted Passes - Successful Passes) + failed dribbles (which is Successful dribbles - Attempted dribbles) + dispossessions + miscontrols
These can be found the FBRef site under the "Player Possession" & "Player Passing" Categories
Now the 4 quadrants that this plot is divided into, kind of categorises or profiles the players into how they progress the ball forward whilst trying not to lose it as much as possible.
Maxime Lopez of Sassuolo, who happens to be playing for the club I adore has 12.83 Progressive Actions Per 90 & just a 7.62 Turnovers per 90, putting him in the top right quadrant of having good ball progression & Security.
Whilst players like Simone Bastoni & Nico Barella tend to lose the ball a bit more but still do a great job at progressing it.
Such plots definitely give me a good look at how Midfielders are performing under key scenarios and it was personally fun to make it.
