Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has withdrawn from the Japan squad after fears that he has suffered a serious injury setback. The full-back picked up the injury during Arsenal's Europa League game against Sporting.
The Japanese international was initially named in the national team squad for their upcoming KIRIN Challenge Cup matches against Uruguay and Colombia, but now, he will not participate in the tournament. He has been replaced by Hiroki Machida in the squad.
Although the exact intensity of the injury has not been confirmed, reports suggest that Tomiyasu has picked up a serious injury which might be a concern for him. The defender underwent further medical examinations.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that the injury is not too serious, as Tomiyasu has quickly become a key player for the Gunners. The 22-year-old has made 18 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Bologna last summer, and has impressed with his defensive solidity and attacking prowess.
Tomiyasu's absence will be a blow for Japan, who are currently participating in KIRIN. The Samurai Blue will play Uruguay on March 24, before facing Colombia on March 28.
Despite the setback, Tomiyasu's withdrawal from the national team squad will give him extra time to recover. The Gunners will face Crystal Palace, in what is sure to be a crucial game in their quest. He will be replaced by Ben White in that game against Palace at the right full-back position
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping that Tomiyasu will be fit to feature in the future, as the Gunners look to build on their recent good form. Let's see how long he takes to make a comeback for gunners as well as his national team.
