This should have been a very good series, but the story got all screwed up by failing to tell us who Erin Carter really was until episode 4 of 7, a very dumb idea that no flashback scene editing can salvage. Those who haven't seen it yet should watch Episode 4 first, then the rest in sequence, starting with Episode 1, to justify your screen time. The acting is admittedly first-rate, but with two exceptions, the characters are the sorriest bunch of undesirable, unsympathetic losers you'll ever see, not funny ones. This shows how talented the actors really are by being forced to play them. I quit counting their collective bad life decisions after about 30. The good character exceptions are Jordi, Erin's husband, played by Sean Teale, who is the only decent human being in the series, and Erin's troubled young 12-year-old daughter Harper, played by Indica Watson, who is well worth knowing. The lead who plays Erin, Evin Ahmad, has outstanding screen ability, and I hope she gets better future roles.
The cinematography is magnificent and shows Barcelona's true beauty in each episode. The action scenes are also generally good, but this is to be expected with any series written by Jack Lothian, whose Strike Back is possibly the best multi-year action series few people ever saw on Cinemax. However, he also gets the blame for ruining Who Is Erin Carter with such a poorly sequenced script. You have to suspend credibility expectations as you see Erin survive multiple shootings, stabbings, and fights to the death no actual person could ever live through, but this is Lothian's trademark. I generously give the series 3 stars because episode 4 saves it from being a bomb. Despite the negatives, I might not mind seeing a new season because episode 4 of Erin Carter might be worth it with a better-told story.
