Look married - In many cultures, women are expected to put on stuff like sindoor, mangal sutra, anklets, toe rings, nose pins, etc to show the world that they're married. Nothing of the sort exists for men.
Do domestic work - House chores like cooking and cleaning tend to become the responsibility of women after marriage. Even though many men are pitching in these days, it's really not an expectation from them, unlike women.
Care for in-laws - Women are expected to become caregivers for their in-laws the moment they get married. But, no such thing is generally expected from men.
Be the primary caregiver for their children - Society expects moms to be the primary caregivers for their children, while dads aren't held responsible for much when it comes to kids.
Give up their career, especially after having kids - Many women are expected to quit their jobs post-marriage or kids to look after their children and household chores. Men are usually not expected to give up their careers, even for their children.
Change how they dress - A lot of times, the husbands' families expect their daughters-in-law to change how they used to dress before marriage. "Western" clothes like jeans and dresses start being frowned upon and women are forced to dress in Indian clothes all the time, even if they are not comfortable.
Give up their social life - Unlike men, many women are expected to give up their social lives and have their whole world revolve around their husbands and their families and friends.
And then when women raise their voices and refuse to follow through, they're labelled as "modern" and disrespectful! What else do you think is expected from women in a marriage but not from men? Tell me in notes below 👇
