The United Nations has asked for $ 4.5 billion in aid to prevent a humanitarian and economic crisis in Afghanistan.
To stem the global humanitarian and economic crisis, the organization called for $ 41 billion in humanitarian aid for 183 million people in countries with conflict and poverty.
Martin Griffiths, the organization's humanitarian aid coordinator, says Afghanistan is at the top of the list of 28 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
"We have never left Afghanistan, and now we are there with the projected plan for 2022 three times, three times the plan for 2021, because of the different needs and circumstances that you are well aware of," Griffiths said.
Lack of cash in Afghanistan is another challenge that the United Nations is working to address.
"The lack of cash in Afghanistan is a major barrier to any service," said Martin Griffiths. "I hope to get it by the end of this month."
Meanwhile, after a six-day visit to Afghanistan, the chief of operations of the Red Cross says he is shocked by what he has seen in Afghanistan.
"There is a huge humanitarian crisis going on, families do not have the money to put food on their plates, the winter has started to get cold," said Chedomink Steele Hart, chief of operations of the International Committee of the Red Cross. "It has reached below freezing point and it is horrible to see this image and now urgent action is needed."
As poverty spreads and Afghanistan's economic system collapses, UN agencies have expressed concern that the government and people want the United States to free its foreign exchange reserves, and see the crisis as a result of the freezing of Afghan currency.
