What exactly is an algorithm? It's not as mysterious as it sounds. It simply refers to a way of sorting posts in a users’ feed based on relevancy instead of publish time.
Social networks prioritize which content a user sees in their feed first by the likelihood that they’ll actually want to see it. (as opposed to a reverse chronological method of sorting) In theory, this is supposed to help you to see more posts that are of interest to you, and that are by your closest friends or favourite influencers. In practice, this can lead to all manner of problems.
For instance, Instagram now prioritises Reels, so photos will receive less importance than Reels. Twitter might put divisive posts into your feed. And Facebook has now been reported to push hateful content or extremist content on users simply for the purpose of generating more engagement (in the form of angry reacts).
Any opaque process that ends up valuing one kind of post or creator over another has the potential to be problematic.
