The King's Affection, a South Korean palace love story drama starring Rowoon of SF9 and Park Eun Bin, makes history by becoming the first Korean drama to ever receive an International Emmy award at the 50th Awards Ceremony.
The drama won the award for Best Telenovela at the ceremony that began in New York on November 21, beating the other nominees Nos Tempos do Imperador from Brazil, Two Lives from Spain, and You Are My Hero from China.
The plot of The King's Affection takes place during the Joseon Dynasty, when giving birth to twins was considered a bad omen. The story is based on a comic book series that was motivated by fantasies about a woman assuming the throne and being forced to vanish from history.
The drama was praised for evoking strong emotions in its audience on a global scale. Lee Geon Joon, the head of KBS Drama Center, told Soompi, “I’m so happy that ‘The King’s Affection’ won the first-ever International Emmy as a Korean drama, and it’s a pleasure to have the potential of Korean dramas as a whole receive recognition”.
He added, “I feel an immense sense of responsibility during this time when K-content is receiving so much love around the world… We will do our best so that KBS dramas can play a large role in maintaining the potential of Korean [entertainment] content”.
