The Income Tax Department told the Supreme Court on Monday that no coercive action will be taken against the Congress party during the Lok Sabha elections in the Income Tax case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared in the Supreme Court on behalf of the Income Tax Department. He said that in view of the Lok Sabha elections, no action will be taken against the Congress Party in the matter of recovery of Rs 1700 crore. The Income Tax Department demanded to postpone the hearing of the case till June. Mehta said, 'We do not want to create trouble for any political party during the elections.'
Congress had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.The Congress Party had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the notice of the Income Tax Department. During the hearing on this petition, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Income Tax Department, recorded his statement before the bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih. Mehta said that Congress is a political party and since elections are going on, we will not take any action against the Congress party. Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared in the Supreme Court on behalf of Congress and welcomed this step of the Income Tax Department.
