The history of democracy in Kuwait.
The essence of democracy is building consensus. In 1752, Kuwaiti population through consenus inaugurated Al Sabah family as the ruling family of Kuwait.
The democratic journey of Kuwait went through many stages over the years. In 1921 under the patronage of first National council democratic traditions came into being. Though the Council lasted only two months, it served as the first organiser council for the participation in decision making.
Then came other elected councils, namely municipality in 1931 and Council for Acquaintances in 1936.
In 1938, Kuwait wintnessed a new phase, the election of consulting council that oversaw the first draft of Kuwait constitution. After the country's independence in 1961, state of Kuwait took further steps in its democratic journey.
Soon after independence of Kuwait, the first National Assembly elections were held in November 23, 1963. It is very important to note that in April 2006 women were given the right to vote and run for the elections.
Fatima Saud Al- Sabah and Fouzia Mohammed Al-Bahar became the first female members of the municipality.
This was followed by the appointment of Dr. Massouma Al -Mubarak as the first female Kuwaiti Minister and she was given the portfolio of Planning and was made Minister of state for administrative development affairs.
Political system in Kuwait:
There are three branches of government and the Amir is the head of all the branches.
*The executive branch: The government and council of Ministers.
*The Legislative branch: 50 members of the National Assembly and Ministees.
*The judicial branch: Supreme judicial council.
