Senior congress leader Veerappa Moily’s assertion on Thursday that the Congress needs to undergo a major surgery, people with competence and mass base should be given charge of state is an obvious prescription for India’s oldest political party which has been in the intensive care unit for quite some time now. Rahul Gandhi’s supporter Jitin Prasada’s exit from the party and entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a little over a year after another Gandhi associate Jyotiraditya Scindia crossed the floor with 22 legislators underlies the accelerating rot in the party. Many leaders including Mr. Moily have argued that their standing with Congress has diminished after the West Bengal Elections. Beyond issuing weak statements about Mr. Prasada’s disloyalty towards party, the Congress high command would do better to use this to act and create the space for the next non-family generation to lead the party skillfully.
In August last year,23 senior congress leaders courageously reminded Sonia Gandhi of what needed to be done , setting out in a letter the need for “certainty” in the leadership, decentralization of power, empowerment of state units etc. No less important is the need for internal elections which have been postponed frequently for one reason or other.
I think even after Mr.Gandhi's resignation as the party president in 2019 which could have definitely been the reset button for the party and a tremendous opportunity for the potential strategists other than the coterie of the aged worthies , the party has remained to be the narrow Nehru-Gandhi enterprise as the leadership returned to the ailing mother of Mr.Gandhi. Moreover , as worse it is for Congress , as beneficial it is for BJP in more than one ways for UP elections in early next year . It seems as if Congress has run its race.
