The Champions League has been predictable in terms of competitors over the last few seasons. The likes of PSG, Real Madrid, and Man City have always been in and around the knockout stages which has turned the competition a bit stale. While it is still appealing to the global fan that the best of the best teams compete against each other and teams like Inter can still hold on their own to reach the finals, it has also gotten a bit boring given the fact we’re going to see most teams next season in the competition once more. This is where the UEL and UECL differ.
The UEL final is more exciting than ever. Serial winners of the competition, Sevilla go up against Mourinho’s Roma. Given that Mourinho has never lost a final in his managerial career, the script of the competition couldn’t be more beautiful. While the brand of football of both teams might be bland, it won’t matter since it is a European final. The UCL spot is up for grabs for both teams given their volatile situations in their respective domestic leagues. If Mourinho wins another European competition, this would be touted to be his best spell as a manager given the stringent budget he is working on at Roma.
Meanwhile, in the UECL, it is Florentina vs West Ham in the final. While West Ham have struggled in the league, they would most likely avoid relegation. Being in European competitions in 3 consecutive seasons is an achievement for the club. Florentina, on the other hand, is far off from any European spots which makes it necessary for them to win the competition. For newer teams to emerge in European competitions, it is prestigious for the fans of the respective clubs. Both the UEL and UECL have given a chance to the newer clubs to be omnipresent amongst Europe’s elite giving them incentives and opportunities to grow their clubs further into the future. This is why the 2nd and 3rd tier European competition is more exciting than the UCL.
