Finally I was persuaded to write and here is the outcome...
I was destined to be. I had never planned to study History at St Stephen’s College. Small town boys in our times became doctors if they were smart. But a spur of the moment impulse took me to Delhi for a journey that has became life defining for me. I nervously took the interview, got selected and got admitted to study History at “ College “.
It was eons ago 1976-81. Five years of exposure to brilliant minds from every corner of the country, ideas that I knew little about and an environment that accepted only excellence. Five years of great friendship and camaraderie and a shared belief that we shall be outstanding citizens of our country.
The pandemic, the technology and the lockdown has given the Class of 79 time to again link up and share our experiences as each of us found our own path to success. Old stories ,old pranks are relived with the same passion. Its reunion time.
Those were times when Civil Service was a top notch career option. Peer pressure and peer motivation ensured that I too became a pilgrim who sought UPSC nirvana. I entered the IPS and spent 36 satisfying years as a cop determined to uphold the Rule of Law.
I am told St Stephen’s has changed now. It’s 40 years since we left. Students now have different options, more opportunities and aspirations. That is the natural thing. But I am certain that College still motivates them to excel, to be fair , to be just and be useful citizens.
See you soon....
