Congress President Sonia Gandhi directed party colleagues to reach out to all the opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, to present a united front during the winter session of Parliament, beginning Monday.
At a meeting to discuss the party strategy for the upcoming Parliament session, Gandhi stressed the need for broader opposition unity to take on the Modi government.
During the discussion, Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary suggested that they should not approach the Trinamool Congress in view of its poaching of Congress leaders from across the country, including 12 of its 17 legislators in Meghalaya on Wednesday.
However, Gandhi rejected the suggestion, insisting that floor management in Parliament and outside politics are two separate issues and emphasised that the two should be segregated.
The statement is significant given that the Trinamool Congress is on a poaching spree of Congress leaders from different states.
From Sushmita Dev to Abhishek Mukherjee (former President of India Pranab Mukherjee's son) to Luizinho Falerio to Kirti Azad and Ashok Tanwar, the Trinamool Congress has inducted several Congress leaders.
Clearly, Gandhi wanted to send a message that all opposition parties should unite against the BJP.
Congress MPs have also decided that theh won’t participate in Constitution Day event in the Central Hall of Parliament on Friday.
Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, Anand Sharma and Jairam Ramesh will speak to other opposition leaders to boycott tomorrow's event.
During the session, it was also decided that the Congress will vociferously demand the repeal of the three farm laws on the first day itself.
The party will also seek a separate law for the minimum support price (MSP).
The Congress will also demand the resignation of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra for his alleged role in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.
Apart from these, it will also raise the price rise and fuel hike issues and demand Rs 4 lakh for Covid victims.
The meeting was also attended by AK Antony, KC Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi, K Suresh, Manickam Tagore and Ravneet Singh Bittu.
Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi did not attend the meeting as he is abroad.
