Kevin Strootman was acquired by Olympique Marseille from Roma in a £22 million deal. Nemanja Radonjic from Red Star joined for £10 million, and Duje Aleta-Car from Salzburg was acquired for £17 million. These acquisitions were partially financed by the £22 million sale of Andre Zambo Anguissa to Fulham.
Monaco had a very active summer transfer window thanks to the big Mbappe exit that was concluded as well as the sales of Thomas Lemar to Atletico Madrid, Fabinho to Liverpool, and Terence Kongolo to Huddersfield. Aleksandr Golovin from CSKA Moscow, Willem Guebbels and Benjamin Henrichs for £18 million each, Jean Eudes Aholou and Nacer Chadli also came.
There was cautious hope in French football that this would be the year of a serious title challenge to PSG after the national team won the World Cup in Russia in July and the hectic transfer season.
However, this confidence was misguided as PSG trampled its way to the Ligue 1 championship. The Parisians set a new league record by winning their first 14 matches, and astonishingly, they didn't drop a point until a 2-1 defeat to an up-and-coming Lyon squad on February 3rd. Lyon struggled to stay consistent throughout the season.
After this loss, the opulent Paris team bounced back by winning their next eight games in a row, defeating Monaco 3-1 to win the title in April, with the mercurial Kylian Mbappe scoring all three goals.
The actual Ligue 1 season tale might be discovered away from the parade of winners, as Monaco, the 16/17 champions and runners-up in 17/18, had a horrible season in which they battled and ultimately avoided relegation, ending in 17th position. In the end, Lille and Monaco would switch places from the previous season, with Lille putting together an excellent campaign and finishing the season as PSG's main rivals.
