Remembering Sarabjit Pandher: A tribute to a veteran journalist, unionist, and avid photographer
By Saurabh Duggal
Ever-smiling, Sarabjit Pandher was a journalist by profession, a unionist by choice, a photographer by passion, and a fighter at his core. Even in his final battle with cancer, he faced it with a smile.
On April 28, the journalism community mourns the loss of one of its stalwarts. Pandher sir's indomitable spirit and infectious smile left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His passing, just a couple of months before his 60th birthday on August 31, leaves a void deeply felt by many.
Pandher sir's illustrious career spanned over three and a half decades, covering militancy, politics, agriculture, and social issues. He received a fellowship from the US State to study farm issues.
His passion for journalism and tireless advocacy for press freedom saw him becoming the president of the Chandigarh Press Club for four terms (2002-2004 & 2008-2010).
After his master's from the Journalism Department at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana, Pandher sir began his journalistic journey as a stringer with The Tribune in Gurdaspur.
Later, he served as a Public Relations Officer in the Punjab State Electricity Department in Patiala before returning to mainstream media with the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency in Chandigarh. He also became president of the PTI Employees Union.
During his stint at the Chandigarh Press Club, he was instrumental in the expansion of the club's main hall and the installation of seating shades on the first-floor terrace.
After retiring prematurely as an Assistant Editor from The Hindu newspaper, he served as Editor-in-chief at Daily Post and also delved into photography, showcasing his talent through exhibitions and establishing a personal photo studio at his residence in Mohali.
My personal interactions with Pandher sir were mainly because of the Chandigarh Press Club. His words echoed his passion for the club's growth, emphasizing the importance of its continued vitality for future generations.
Beyond his professional achievements, Pandher sir's warmth and generosity endeared him to colleagues and acquaintances, and his dedication to the club will always be remembered.
You will be deeply missed, Pandher sir.
