I have spoken with the national coach, Surinder Mahajan, after she won her quarterfinal match and entered the top-four section.
It was under Mahajan's coaching she competed in the junior circuit and participated in the Youth Olympics, junior Asian and junior World Championship.
"Because of her tall height, she had to really work hard on her agility, so that she could cover the court well. During the junior days, agility was an issue with her. But as she progressed to the senior category, she put an extra effort to overcome this," says former junior national coach Surinder Mahajan. "I want to compliment her parents, who sacrificed everything for her. They were at her disposal 24X7. I still remember, her father used to take her 40km one way to the training centre in Hyderabad."
"Everyone was expecting her to win the semi-final match, but it was her hard luck. Today, she played superb and dominated the match throughout. Her back-to-back Olympic medal will popularise the sport more and more in the country," says Mahajan, who runs a coaching centre in Chandigarh.
