Priscilla is very specific about its context, period, and people. In his biopic Elvis, this slice of Elvis-Priscilla's life is not shown much. I could feel that freshness in Priscilla. Director Sofia Coppola is not keen on any reason or logic or even an emotional outburst due in the troubled weather of this film based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me. It resonates more with the memoir title. How did Elvis see and treat his baby girl Priscilla when she got transferred to Graceland?
After their surprising first meeting at a party in Germany, the film’s ambiance shifts to a storybook romance. Both were smitten. Normal life after that for Priscilla is a glossy cage. She has everything and beyond, a teenager can hope for. The cherry on the cake is she is the girl of Elvis. Every casual rejection in Priscilla’s life in her teenage, since she blindly followed her heart, is captured silently. Being officially cared for also means you are under surveillance. Moments with Elvis are heavenly for her. On that crazy shore, Priscilla is expecting high tides any moment. That’s Elvis’s inconsistent persona thriving on pills and drugs. Surrounded by people fed by him, Elvis’ choices rule the atmosphere. Priscilla’s makeup and couture befitting the period deprives her of her age and desires. But, her physical urges don’t overwhelm Elvis. It’s not that baby care she wants anymore.
It’s so embarrassing to watch Elvis fondly instruct her over the phone she should be there whenever he calls. Gentle gas lighting in the air. Her deep missing didn’t seem to bother Elvis when he was on concert tours and movie sets. He is a typical grown-up there. Priscilla’s encounters with loneliness and occasional overjoys make her realize real life. That direct throw at Elvis – we are living in two different worlds –she missed herself. Her identity and soul. She felt so inferior and insecure in a golden cage custom-made by Elvis for her. She now has to own a little sky to breathe fresh air and spread her wings.
Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi –how real you made that jarring pair!
