Premier League Set to Lose Out on Extra UEFA Champions League Spot!
Germany's first division league, Bundesliga, is poised to gain the second additional Champions League spot next season under UEFA's new club competition format. This spot, along with one for Italy's Serie A, comes from the overall performance of clubs in Europe. The more successful a country's clubs are, the more points the country earns.
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund reaching the Champions League semifinals has put the Bundesliga in a strong position. Meanwhile, English representatives Arsenal and Manchester City were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Bayern and Real Madrid, respectively.
In the Europa League, Bayer Leverkusen knocked out West Ham United in the quarterfinal stage. Owing to Leverkusen's win, Germany's additional Champions League spot for next season is all but secured. Owing to this, the team finishing 5th in the Bundesliga will earn a spot in the Champions League for the next season.
Serie A will also have five representatives in the Champions League while Premier League and LaLiga will remain with four each most likely as the competition expands from 32 to 36 teams next season.
England's only chance for getting the fifth Champions League spot now will come if Aston Villa win both the legs of their UEFA Conference League semi-final and the final. To add to this, German representatives should get knocked out from their respective competitions in the semi-final.
