Or even Trump calling white America the ‘real America’
The comment is left and social programs but tRump was more the authoritarian and the Republican Party seems to be bent on being popular...?
Trump was a populist for sure.
Hey, man! Interesting read! Although I can’t seem to recollect where PM Modi said that thing about Hindus being the ‘true people’.
What’s the source for that? Thanks
My apologies. There was no direct reference and all I wanted to say was the the indirect priority that Hindus recieve in the nation. Hope the edit sounds better
The word ‘populism’ is making the rounds in major social media platforms and news channels as well. They generally refer to leaders that are erratic and not well liked by the individuals that lean towards the left when coming to social ideologies. This leaders are characterised in such a way that they come out as headstrong and unwilling to change. While this may be true many, political researcher and authors try to explain and understand what it means to be an authoritarian. One such political scientist is Francis Fukuyama. Fukuyama’s most famous piece of writing is the ‘The End of History and The Last Man’ which talks about the global spread of western liberal democracies and free market capitalism and how that will end up taking over the world.
He has a very specific definition for populism, it’s something that I believe is very true and can be easily understood by looking at what’s happening around us.
According to Francis Fukuyama the identification of populism has 3 important definitions, which are:
1. “[Populism] is a regime that pursues policies that are popular in the short run but unsustainable in the long run, usually in the realm of social policies”. This may include the provision of price subsidies to certain groups or other similar initiatives.
2. The definition of the ‘true people’ of a certain region and emphasis the need for them to take their country back from the ‘others’. Can be observed in India with Prime Minister Modi and his party’s inclination towards the protection of Hindus and negligence to some other members of the nation.
3. Individuals that have a personality that showcases a populist leader as a “charismatic authority that exists independently of political institutions.” Such leaders set up a relationship that portrays a direct connection to the people.
I shall be exploring his thought process and his opinions and try to write what I think of his definition and how we can see it around us.
