How do you react when your teen behaves badly? Does your reaction trigger your teen to push you away, act out in hurtful ways, or shut down?
If you're not sure whether you're contributing to the problems (or the solutions) at home, ask your teen to tell you what changes he'd like to see. The bottom line is - kids don't struggle in a vacuum. Parents struggle, too. Sometimes we contribute to our teen's negative behavior and quite often our kids don't know how to respond to it.
The more of a voice they have, the more involved they'll be. The more involved they are, the more empowered they'll feel. The more empowered they feel, the less they'll fight us. And, the less they fight us, the more they'll actually listen to us which will strengthen our relationship and foster mutual respect... it's a domino effect.
