The Governments of many countries often launch secret operations in which includes chemical warfare and biological warfare. Often the public gets affected by these without their knowledge. Let’s check out
one such secret operation.
Operation Sea Spray was a real-life military operation conducted by the United States Navy in 1950. It involved the release of bacteria over the San Francisco Bay Area in order to study the potential spread of
biological weapons. The operation was conducted by the U.S. Navy’s Chemical Corps and took place from
September 20 to 27, 1950.
The Navy used a specially equipped minesweeper, the USS TSS (Technical Support Ship) Patterson, to
release a cloud of bacteria known as Serratia marcescens into the air. S. marcescens was chosen because
it is a relatively harmless bacterium but has similar properties to potential biological weapons.
The bacteria were released several times over a period of six days, with the winds carrying the cloud over the San Francisco Bay Area. The operation involved the dispersal of a large amount of bacteria,
estimated to be around 5,000 particles per minute, in a 1.5-kilometer radius.
The Navy monitored the spread of the bacteria using sampling stations at various locations throughout the Bay Area. The operation was meant to test the feasibility of using biological weapons and evaluate
how the bacteria would spread and persist in an urban environment.
However, the operation was conducted without the knowledge or consent of the public. As a result, the release of the bacteria caused infections in some individuals, including one death. The operation came to light In the 1970s when investigative journalists and scientists exposed the details. It sparked significant
controversy and led to a series of lawsuits against the U.S. government. The incident raised ethical concerns about the use of human subjects in military experiments without their knowledge or consent.
Operation Sea Spray served as a catalyst for stricter regulations and oversight regarding human subjects
in scientific and military research. It also led to increased awareness of the potential dangers associated
with biological weapons testin
