Nissim Ezekiel is often considered the father of Modern Indian English poetry by many critics. He was honoured with the Padmashri award by the President of India in 1988 and the Sahitya Akademi cultural award in 1983.
Nissim Ezekiel was not only a poet but also a philosopher, naturalist, promoter and publisher of poetic compositions. He was born in 1924 in a bay in Israel in a bane jew family and brought up in pre-independent Bombay. He is one of the major poets in the modern post world war II phase of Indian poetry in English.
