India cleberates today, 100th birth anniversary of Varghese Kurian who is considered as the father of white revolution . This day ; 26 November is annualy celeberated as national milk day saluting his contribution in helping making India the world's largest milk production country. The co-operative model he designed helped India achieve tremendous increase in milk production. While food grain production went up about three times from about 108 million tonne in 1970-71 to 300 million tonne in 2019-20,milk production increased by amazing nine times in the same period, from 21 million tonne to over 200 Million tonne. The per capita milk availability in India now exceeds 400gm. Cows and bulls may be methane emitters causing ozone depletion issues. They also may be grazing on grasslands leading to destruction of forest patches. But for the farmers in many of the mountain villages like this one in Kuttikanam,Idukki these cows are their only livelihood in these Covid and climate challenged times.Kurien's model of Anand Pattern of milk cooperative soceities has brought income stability to millions of small Indian dairy farmers. Now they had regular, dependable and often sizeable family income supplementing their periodic and uncertian crop incomes .Thus cattle rearing has become an enterprise partnered by millions in India. Varghese Kurien an Indian engineer turned management expert built several rural institutions from National Dairy Development Board(NDDB) to Indian Rural Management Institute (IRMA). Hailing from Keralam in Southern India his work place was in Anand ,Gujarath,Western India. Though his strength and the faith lakhs of local farmers placed on him, Anand thus become India's milk capital. Anand Milk Union Ltd's shortened brand name AMUL is a household name of trust in India and even across it's borders. In 2000 the oppurtunity to interview him in his turf was one of my greatest feats in my journalism carrier.https://youtu.be/iaqKGzj7-zY Salute you Kurien Sir.
