A bipartisan coalition of Members of Parliament (MPs) is scheduled to hold discussions with the UK government's security minister concerning the security of Sikh activists residing in Britain. Labour MP Preet Kaur Gill highlighted apprehensions following the emergence of an "intelligence hit list" on various Indian media platforms, identifying 20 Sikhs living outside India as "enemies of the state."
Of particular concern are six British Sikhs named on the list, some of whom are now under police safeguarding. The meeting, slated for Tuesday, aims to address these pressing security issues. Some Sikh activists have reportedly received notifications from law enforcement, known as Osman warnings, indicating credible threats to their lives.
Tensions escalated after revelations from Canada implicated the Indian government in the assassination of Canadian Sikh Hardeep Singh Nijjar, advocating for Khalistan, a separate Sikh homeland. Additionally, US prosecutors charged an Indian national with plotting the murder of Sikh separatists in North America.
MP Gill emphasized the necessity for governmental assurance of safeguarding the British Sikh community against unlawful threats and attacks. She underscored the importance of listening to the accounts of affected individuals to effectively address these concerns with Indian counterparts. While the Indian embassy in London refrained from comment, the UK government reiterated its commitment to upholding individuals' rights, freedom, and safety.
