Sitting in a cold movie theatre> everything
I miss going to movie theaters!🥺
Lucky you!
How is it compared to Captain Marvel?
I’m going to be honest with you about the three reasons I went to see Black Widow: I want to support superhero movies starring women, I like Florence Pugh, and I wanted to sit in a cold movie theatre with a Fanta Fruit Twist instead of my baking hot flat with lukewarm tap water.
I’ve been feeling a bit fatigued by the sheer amount of Marvel movies released and announced in the last few years, but I was absolutely gobsmacked by this one.
The emotional arc was beautifully played out. They balanced humor and grief with an aplomb that a lot of Marvel movies lack. The acting is great: David Harbour provides some welcome humor and Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh are simultaneously badass and vulnerable.
You can also tell that this film was made by women. The costumes are more practical and less egregiously sexy. The women wear their hair back to fight. There’s a whole scene in which one of them sings the praises of finally having enough pockets, which is a struggle every women knows well. There’s also an interesting and unique take on the found family trope.
The result is something that hits differently than other Marvel movies. It’s layered and poignant and hits at violence against women. It’s complex and, at times, emotionally intense. But don’t worry—there’s no shortage of Marvel’s signature amount of sheer destruction. 8/10
