Should I buy a weighted keyboard?
First, what is a weighted keyboard? The official name for the piano is pianoforte. In Italian, piano means soft and forte means loud. When you press a piano key gently, it produces a soft tone. When you press it with force it produces a loud tone. Different levels of force produce different levels of volume.
Organ and synthesizer keys are not weighted. Regardless of how gently or with force you press a key, the volume is always the same.
One aspect of learning to play the piano requires you to be efficient at producing different levels of volume. Sheet music will give you some clues with dynamic marks (p, pp, ppp for softness, f, ff, fff for loudness, mp for medium soft, and mf for medium loud). So, as you learn and you decide you are serious about learning piano, eventually, you should get a keyboard with weighted keys.
Should I start learning by taking piano lessons?
That depends on your interest, budget, and how you learn. I think the best way is to start with a piano app. This gives you the opportunity to learn at a relaxed pace and may fit better into your schedule based on work and family commitments.
There are a variety of apps and programs that you can explore. Some of these are Flowkey, JoyTunes , Piano Maestro, Piano Marvel, Playground Sessions, and Skoove. They average around $109 for a yearly subscription. That initially may seem expensive but many piano teachers charge a minimum of $30 per half hour per lesson. With an app, you can take as many lessons as you want whenever you want. And if you really get into it, you can also take piano lessons. There is no reason why you can’t do both.
