When the elders used to go anywhere, they used to carry fine homemade tobacco in a bag made of leather. Neither bidi nor cigarette hassle. Women also used to always keep dry snuff tobacco in a small box in abundance.
Instead of wallet, there used to be a cloth pouch (Pothia)in which some rupees etc. were kept. Most of our utensils were made by the potters of the village. Large Storage Utinsils (Maat) for grain storage were either made by the potter or were made by themselves from Multani clay and paper or clay and dung. Till later, the fringe of the sack was made, in which the grains were kept, some rich people used to make Bukhari (permanent construction storage above floor level) for grain storage.
There was not even a peel (chhotkar) of sugarcane left in the streets, all were taken by the potters to be used in the AWA to bake the pots. #Dung was delivered to #pathware or #kurdi (Garbage). The streets were not so muddy. There were big johads (ponds) where everyone had to dig their own share according to dhung, panne and clan. Be it fuel to burn or wood to build a house, most of them were prepared in their own fields and barns.
We used to make #Piyau and #Dharamshala everywhere with out Government Support. Shade was made by planting heavy trees on the wells, stepwells, johads and intersections. Even today, if you go towards Jind, you will see pagoda-like #Betode (dung cakes storage) and Toodi #coops in the fields and #Gitwads, which are excellent ways of storing #Ghose (dung cakes), Thepadi (thin dung cakes)and Toodi (straw dust). At that time, we used to prepare baskets, umbrellas, carts, ropes, cots, beds (khat), cloths ourselves.
Modernity has not only taken away civilization, it has ended self-reliance. Today, if there is no electricity in one area for a week, neither flour nor milk, curd can be availed nor clothes will be washed.
We were self-dependent then, not today. Government and civilization have snatched our self-reliance
