Mehbooba Mufti to Contest Against Ghulam Nabi Azad from Anantnag-Rajouri Seat in Lok Sabha Elections 2024
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, has announced her candidacy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency.
Mufti will face competition from Mian Altaf Ahmad of the National Conference (NC) and Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle.
The PDP Parliamentary Board Chief, Sartaj Madni, also revealed that Waheed Parra, the president of the party's youth wing, will contest from Srinagar, while former Rajya Sabha member Mir Fayaz will contest from Baramulla.
In a significant move, the PDP has decided to extend its support to the Congress on two seats in the Jammu region, namely Udhampur and Jammu.
The voting in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in five phases, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 4. The phases are as follows:
- Phase 1 (April 19): Udhampur
- Phase 2 (April 26): Jammu
- Phase 3 (May 7): Anantnag-Rajouri
- Phase 4 (May 13): Srinagar
- Phase 5 (May 20): Baramulla
Additionally, in Ladakh, which has only one Parliamentary seat, the election will take place in the fifth phase on May 20.
These developments underscore the political dynamics and keen contestation expected in the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, with various parties vying for electoral success in the region.
