Next Maria Sharapova
Fantastic
Emma Raducanu is 19 and first qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles in open era. She is first British woman to win a Grand Slam in 44 years. In 1977, her compatriot Virginia Wade won US open.
She and her opponent Leylah Fernandez, who is also teenager of 18, have breathed a new life into women's tennis which was struggling to find worthy successors to Serena Williams or Maria Sharapova.
Raducanu has a very unique family background that can really inspire girls from many countries. Her father Ian is Romanian and mother Renne is Chinese. She was born in Canada but her parents settled in London when she was 2. And then she is an immigrant success story.
I fell in love with tennis when as a boy I saw Boris Becker winning Wimbledon in 1985 when he was just 17 years and 7 months old. Becker was a huge influence on the tour and outside it.
Now the question is whether Raducanu and Fernandez can maintain this momentum and standard for very long and become legendary rivals like Martina Navratilova- Chris Evert or Serana Williams-Justine Henin or Steffi Graf-Monica Seles? It will be good to watch these girls for next few years.
