Manchester United defeated Crystal Palace 2-1, but the victory was overshadowed by the dismissal of outstanding player Casemiro.
When the final horn sounds, Manchester United has managed to earn all three points. With the Red Devils leading 2-0, that appeared an implausible scenario, but Casemiro's moment of insanity—in which he effectively strangled Will Hughes—meant the hosts played the final 20 minutes with 10 men.
A scruffy Jeffrey Schlupp goal threatened a thrilling finale, but Erik ten Hag's men held on for their 13th straight victory at home, in large part because of some outstanding defending by Lisandro Martinez. As a consequence, United has won four straight games since suffering a last-second loss against Arsenal last month.
After five minutes, VAR deemed Will Hughes to have handled a cross from Rashford inside the area, and the hosts were given a penalty. After Fernandes converted the penalty kick, United controlled the first half but were unable to add to their lead.
After the break, Luke Shaw assisted Rashford in doubling United's advantage with a superb finish. After 70 minutes, the game changed when Casemiro was sent for clutching Hughes' neck after a VAR review. Palace scored again five minutes later on a Schlupp deflection past David de Gea, but United held on to secure the victory.
Sabitzer looked terrific, but could they see this through as Rashford struggled to maintain the ball in the attacking end? Reds supporters were on edge when 10 against 12 was played, with the referee appearing to be on Palace's side.
After over nine minutes of extra time, there was an audible sigh of relief heard across the stadium. The Reds were content with the three points for the time being, but they will need to deal with Casemiro's predicament in the morning.
