Liverpool's miserable season continued when they were defeated at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who improved their Premier League survival chances with a huge win.
For the first time since 2012, the Reds were trying to avoid losing their third straight away Premier League game, but they fell down after only five minutes when Hwang Hee-cross chan's was deflected into the Liverpool goal by Joel Matip. Just seven minutes later, sloppy defense enabled Craig Dawson to score on his debut, driving in from close range. Things went worse for Jurgen Klopp's team.
In a dismal first half performance, Liverpool only mustered one shot on goal, but they improved after the interval. Darwin Nunez drove right at Jose Sa as Wolves went further behind after Andy Robertson's goal-bound attempt was blocked and Mohamed Salah's good effort missed the post. However, the home team withstood the pressure before attacking their opponents on the break, with Ruben Neves scoring after excellent work from Adama Traore.
There were no changes made at halftime, but Liverpool came out stronger after the interval, having greater possession of the ball and more options because of Nunez's mobility up front. The chances continued coming Keita's way on the edge of the box, but the Guinean still having trouble striking it accurately because the No. 8 jersey was still haunting him nearly five years later. Trent Alexander-superb Arnold's long pass put Nunez in a one-on-one situation with Jose Sa, but Nunez took the ball down while running and fired straight at the goalkeeper.
With two replacements combining on the counter, Wolves took advantage of Liverpool's persistent pressure. Adama Troare was passed through by Joao Moutinho, who also saw Ruben Neves' third-man run for a cross and effective finish. While there is no danger that Klopp will be fired, the Molineux crowd's chant of "Sacked in the morning" indicates the magnitude of the challenge facing the Reds manager.
