Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo scored and assisted in their 3-0 home win over bottom-placed Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, propelling them to seventh place.
Brentford started the game on the front foot, as expected, with Yoane Wissa smashing the post from close range. Wissa latched onto Mbuemo's lofted through ball over the defence before rounding Gavin Bazunu with his first touch.
The Bees pushed for the opener, with Mbuemo losing his balance at an inopportune time, before Ivan Toney's goal-bound effort was blocked by Mohammed Salisu following good work from Wissa down the flank.
Southampton's best chance came early on when Che Adams almost found James Ward-Prowse, who continued in the more offensive midfield role that their manager Nathan Jones has used in recent weeks, but the England midfielder couldn't quite reach the ball to make contact for a potential tap-in at the far post.
Brentford's Ben Mee opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a bullet header into the top left corner, converting a lovely lofted pass by Mbeumo.
Three minutes later, Cameroonian international Yoane Wissa set him up with a brilliant cross into the box, which Mbeumo finished with a low first-time shot.
Mathias Jensen, a midfielder for the home side, sealed the victory in the 80th minute with a header inside the right post, giving Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu no chance.
Brentford have won four of their last five league games and now have 33 points from 21 games, three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.
Southampton are now two points adrift at the bottom of the table, with relegation looking increasingly likely, while Brentford have climbed to seventh place as they continue to sting their opponents at the Gtech Community Stadium.
