On Wednesday, Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the party's first non-Gandhi president in more than 20 years. Shashi Tharoor lost to Kharge in the Congress President election on Monday. Sonia Gandhi, the interim Congress leader who has held the position since Rahul Gandhi resigned during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, will be replaced by Kharge. On Wednesday, the results of the election held on October 17 were tallied. Shashi Tharoor received more than 1,000 votes, while Kharge received over 7,000.
Shashi Tharoor received roughly 1000 votes, and Mallikarjun Kharge won the Congress presidential election with 7,897 votes; 416 votes were disregarded.
