I realize the great mindset, TV shows like Malgudi brought into my life and a special way I bonded with my country.
The point I have observed vividly in the passing years, when we are dealing with Questions like “Why Hindi?”, why have I not been intrigued with this Question? Why was there never a point I felt I needed to embrace regional language more to identity myself? I do believe Mother Tongue is in our blood, we don’t have to be insecure of it. We just need to be a little mindful to accept a common Indian Language. English may be a common language but not Indian.
Why is there a dilution of this idea of Hindi “a common Indian language”? Where every other Song in Bollywood has Punjabi and the characters too and every other Hindi TV shows depicts stories of Northern India not that I disrespect Punjabi or any Language. Where is the representation from down south? Or maybe the Question is to people from south, why are we not trying to tell our stories to India? Not in form of dubbed movies and not in the sense as stereo typical dhoti clad dark man talking with an accent and being too funny or too serious. I want to be represented in mainstream Indian shows and our stories being told and shows like Malgudi bonds me to that idea.
Malgudi was a perfect example of an Indian TV show which bonded me to India. I saw Hindi spoken by people who primarily were Kannadigas from the south. Is that not a strong message to bond as one with a language? They depicted socially relevant stories bringing the flavor of small town, middle class and moral values to all classes of people and age groups in India thus I proudly say bonded me to India, I am represented as person from down south, we do have characters, and we have stories too!!! Doordarshan brought many such stories from rest of the country which I loved watching too. Understanding the diversity but in a common language—“Hindi”. Thus may be, I have never pondered “Why Hindi”
