Whenever the rise of evil has been on peak, the women have always stepped forward and protected the human race.
Today marks a very auspicious day for the Bengali households known as the Mahalaya. This day marks the beginning of the Durga Puja, when the Goddess visits her maternal home descending from Mount Kailash, where she resides with her husband Lord Shiva and her four children, Saraswati, Laxmi, Kartikeya and Ganesh.
According to the mythology Mahalaya is also the day when Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswar, Indra and all the other God's created Goddess Durga to defeat the demon King Mahishasura, thus, Devi Paksha starts from this day.
A quintessential Bengali household starts the day at dawn while listening to the Mahishasura Mardini, which is a combination of hymns, and devotional Bengali songs which are together all rolled into one. It describes the journey of Maa Durga and how she defeats Mahishasura. In the 1930s Mahalaya, it was the first time 'Mahishasura Mardini' was broadcasted over the radio. Later, it was recorded in the voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra, whose voice still rules the heart of all the Bengalis https://youtu.be/JXDnhN-hPT4.
As Bengalis are hard core non vegetarians but on Mahalaya we eat fresh home cooked vegetarian food. Houses are cleaned before this day, and offerings are also performed. Mahalaya is also a day about happiness, and celebration, a time which is usually spent with family.
This day is also about remembrance of the power of truth and courage, and of the universal fact that good will always triumph over evil.
