One of the saddest things about Indian society, to me, is the fact that there is no 'Indian dream.' Unlike in the West, there is very little chance for social mobility. If you are born into poverty, or a historically marginalised caste - well then, it is almost impossible to overcome the circumstances of your birth. So many things keep you from achieving your dreams: things like the fact that you don't speak English.
That's why sport is so important in countries like India. It is the only avenue where people with talent can hope to overcome- as long as access barriers are low. If it costs a hefty fee to train young women in, say, soccer, how can they hope to become good enough to play nationally or even internationally? That's why its so important for schools to focus on sport.
For a long time, Indian culture has been dismissive, even downright derisive, of pursuits that fall outside of the academic. But that doesn't make sense, because not everyone is good at, say, engineering or medicine.
The answer to solving so many problems in Indian society is to focus on sport and to improve access and training for everyone, especially the underprivileged.
