James Ward-Prowse's late penalty won his side an unlikely point against Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday. Spurs who are chasing a top 4 spot this season found themselves 3-1 up in the second half but could not hold on for all three points. Ivan Perisic and Pedro Porro scored their first ever goals for the club but had to watch their side come up short against the team languishing in last place.
Pape Sarr's flying leg was deemed to have brought Kamaldeen Sulemana down in the penalty box, handing James Ward-Prowse an opportunity to rescue a point in which defensive errors and injuries seemed to have cost them everything.
Rubén Selles' time as interim manager has seen the side pick up points against much better sides.
Antonio Conte lost Richarlison to injury early on in the game.
Selles was forced to withdraw both centre backs in the first half. Injury breaks meant that there were 7 minutes of added time in the first half during which Porro netted the opener. Moments after the restart, an equaliser was scored by Che Adams. Harry Kane then scored his first goal outside London since early October. Perisic then added a third.
However, Theo Walcott scored for the first time in years to cut the deficit to one goal. As the game went on, it looked like Spurs might still leave with three points until the fateful foul and penalty. Spurs stay 4th on the table, 2 points ahead of Newcastle, albeit with two more games played.
