North Goa Congress candidate Ramakant Khalap on Friday blamed sitting MP and Union Minister Shripad Naik for the neglect of Mapusa market which he said was suffering from lack of amenities that were affecting buyers and sellers at the market and most importantly was damaging to the business community of the city who was losing business to other cities.
Addressing the people during a rally through the market, Khalap said he was disheartened by the state of the market that appeared to have seen better days.
“The Mapusa market is a market for the whole of north Goa and not just locals but also tourists come here to explore the diversity of things being sold. I don’t think the north Goa MP has even set foot in the Mapusa market ever. Today there are no facilities for the people to even drink water, for street sellers to sit in the shade. It has just been neglected,” Khalap said.
“It appears that the North Goa MP has not spent a single rupee either through central funds or through MPLAD funds through which he gets Rs 5-crore on the city of Mapusa,” Khalap said.
Khalap sought the support of those visiting the market on Friday, which is market day in the historic town and greeted shop keepers, sellers and those visiting the market.
Addressing a rally after his rally through the market, Khalap promised that within one year of being elected he will put together a comprehensive development plan for Mapusa, its market as well as for the construction of a ring road around the city to help deal with the congestion the city currently faces.
“Today the market is so neglected. There is n o place to walk, no place to sit for the vendors and buyers. No sanitation, no ventilation, no drainage, and no parking. I had proposed a comprehensive development plan for Mapusa that would have taken care of these problems 20 years back and had given to the state government and the municipality, but no one has done anything about it,” he said.
