England's left-arm spinner, Jack Leach, is set to undergo knee surgery following an injury sustained during the ongoing series in India. The injury occurred while fielding in the opening Test in Hyderabad, forcing Leach to miss the subsequent matches and eventually withdraw from the series. Despite initial assessments suggesting a less severe situation, the swelling in Leach's knee persisted, leading to the decision for surgery.
Leach expressed his unfortunate situation, stating, "It was the second ball of the first innings in the field, so that whole game I was playing with this knee problem. I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done and then hopefully I can get back to playing cricket."
Fortunately, England's next Test series is scheduled for July, allowing Leach sufficient time for rehabilitation and recovery. With no white-ball commitments, the left-arm spinner aims to return to action and regain rhythm ahead of the upcoming domestic and international season. Leach emphasized his eagerness to have a consistent run in cricket, saying, "I'd love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again, and hopefully that can happen once I've got this sorted."
This surgery comes as a setback for Leach, and England will be keen to have him fully fit for the challenges ahead, starting with the series against West Indies in July.
