But a new and emerging body of research is challenging this understanding.
A few years ago, Kinsey Institute Researcher Justine Lehmiller conducted a survey among 4,175 Americans on sexual fantasies for his book 'Tell Me What You Want.'
What he discovered was 59 per cent of women and 26 per cent of men who identified exclusively as heterosexual, have indeed had same-sex fantasies before, indicating that sexual fluidity is actually more common across genders and sexual orientations.
Similarly, another research published in the Archives of Sexual Behvaiour showed that gay men enjoyed watching opposite-gender oriented porn,
which may come as a surprise to many. What these studies clearly show is
that sexual attractions and behaviours are more than just identity.
But integrating same-sex fantasies into a marriage requires trust, comfort and understanding from both the partners. So perhaps, the first step is to make a partner come to terms with it.
To know more about it, I spoke to Dr D Narayana Reddy, a globally acclaimed sexual health specialist and a vvox expert.
Dr D Narayana Reddy: It’s not uncommon for married men to watch gay porn. But usually, they watch it once or twice out of curiosity, but not on a regular basis. If the habit is sustained, he may have homosexual tendencies. Many Indian men who are homosexual are forced to get married by their parents, due to shame and stigma, as they think that a marriage will “cure” them of such tendencies. This can be extremely unfair and cruel to their unsuspecting partners. In such men, dormant homosexual tendencies can be triggered while watching gay porn.
