The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will conclude on May 26, just before the commencement of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in North America. The tournament, spanning over 10 weeks, will culminate at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, the home ground of the reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings.
This announcement comes alongside the unveiling of the complete schedule of the IPL 2024, raising anticipation and excitement among cricket enthusiasts worldwide. However, the timing presents a challenge for players as they will only have a week's break before diving into the T20 World Cup.
Notably, the IPL serves as a magnet for top cricket talent globally, with players from nine out of the twenty participating nations in the T20 World Cup being part of IPL franchise teams.
The decision to release the full IPL schedule follows a phased approach, with an initial announcement of the first 21 fixtures. Concerns regarding effective management, security, and logistical challenges amid India's upcoming general elections partly influenced the staggered schedule release.
Furthermore, to accommodate logistical challenges, several IPL teams such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals will play some home matches at neutral venues like Dharamsala and Guwahati. The knockout stage will kick off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad before culminating in Chennai with the highly anticipated final.
