Food allergens are food constituents that can cause allergy or allergic reaction in babies and adults.
Common food allergens... The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) identifies eight foods as major food allergens - milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
Symptoms of food allergy;
- hives or welts
- swelling of mouth or throat
- coughing or difficulty breathing
- vomiting and diarrhoea
While the 'old school of thought' says that allergens should be given after the age of one, early introduction to different varieties of food will expose the child and help build tolerance and immunity to the possible allergens. Babies should be introduced to allergens as early as 6 months of age to increases their tolerance to allergens later in life!
Eventhough most babies will NOT have food allergies, it is better to be vigilant and attend to allergic symptoms on immediate basis...
