India was just 40 ODIs old when they entered and liftted the 1983 World Cup.
India’s tally of 40 ODIs was the 2nd least when it came to countries that had Test status at that point in time. In the two previous World Cup's of 75' & 79' india had won just a solitary match that too against East Africa.
One of the most important reasons that India won the 1983 World Cup was the fact that they had several all-rounders. Not only did they have a champion of the stature of Kapil, but they had several utility cricketers like Madan Lal, Roger Binny, Ravi Shastri and Kirti Azad, along with Mohinder Amarnath. Their bowling attack was also suitable for the English conditions, with Kapil, Madan Lal, Binny, Balwinder Sandhu and Amarnath in their side. The squad did not have a single specialist spinner which is unthinkable. The selectors picked a well balanced squad and a lot of credit goes to them. Kudos to the then selection committee comprising of Chandu Borde, Ghulam Ahmad, Chandu Sarwate, Pankaj Roy and Bishen Singh Bedi.
