India's Book Obsession
Books are huge in India - whether ancient epic tales or modern novels, people in this country are totally obsessed with reading all kinds of literature.
You can't miss the book-loving craze no matter where you go. In big cities, fancy new bookstores and cramped old book stalls are overflowing with publications in pretty much every Indian language you can think of. Parents are always dragging their kids to these shops, stocking up on storybooks and textbooks for the school year.
Even street vendors sell cheap pocket novels and used magazines from little pop-up stands. Local trains are packed with commuters who have their noses buried in books and magazines during the ride. There's also tons of book clubs where members get together to passionately discuss the latest hits.
The book obsession extends to India's most remote villages too. Under the glow of solar lamps, kids devour hand-me-down textbooks from older generations. Elders gather in evening circles to orally pass down ancient folklore tales. While really old, worn-out copies of spiritual classics like the Bhagavad Gita get shared around.
Indians have mad respect for authors and poets, both past and present. Literary greats like Rabindranath Tagore, Munshi Premchand and Sadat Hasan Manto are hugely famous across the whole nation. Their masterpiece books become treasured hand-me-down texts.
From huge cities to tiny rural villages, India's craze for the written word burns super bright. Whether it's religious texts or cheesy romance novels, this country simply can't get enough of diving into an awesome story between the pages.
