India is cancer capital of the world-Apollo report
The word of caution first from me , the report is not peer reviewed or published . It’s the hospitals publication hence won’t
be given that kind of credence in medical circles .
Earlier last year ICMR study has highlighted the burden of the disease in India and said one in every nine persons in India is at risk of developing cancer in his or her lifetime.
The study carried out by the ICMR-Na-tional Centre for Disease Informatics and
Research
(NCDIR) is based on a statistical analysis of the number of new cases of the disease being reported in the country vis-a-vis the number of individuals in the population at risk .

A recent health report on India, released on Friday, highlighted a significant increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) nationwide, particularly in cancer cases. The 4th edition of the Health of Nation Report by Apollo Hospitals, launched on World Health Day 2024, indicated that approximately one in three Indians are pre-diabetic, two in three are pre-hypertensive, and one in 10 are experiencing depression.
The numbers don't lie: one-third of Indians are pre-diabetic, two-thirds are pre-hypertensive, and one in ten struggles with depression. These chronic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health issues, are reaching critical levels and significantly impacting the nation's health.
Of particular concern is the skyrocketing number of cancer cases, exceeding global averages. The report also warns of a looming healthcare crisis as pre-diabetes, pre-hypertension, and mental health disorders are increasingly diagnosed in younger age groups.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR), the incidence of cancer in India has been steadily increasing over the years. Dr Nikhil S Ghadyalpatil, director of medical oncology, senior consultant medical oncologist & hemato-oncologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, said.
