Spinach can now send emails about explosives and possibly climate change alerts.

Engineers at MIT used nanotechnology to transform spinach plants into explosive detectors that can wirelessly communicate information to scientists, Euro News reports.

Carbon nanotubes within the plant emit a signal when spinach roots detect compounds associated with explosives in groundwater. An infrared camera that catches the spinach’s signal, sends an alert via email.

The scientists from this experiment believe this process could be used to warn researchers about changes in environmental conditions and pollution.

“Because of the vast amount of data plants absorb from their surroundings, they are ideally situated to monitor ecological changes,” Euronews reports.
