I love slow burn foreign horror, and nobody does it better than the French series' makers do. From the Netflix series' 'The Forest', 'Black Spot' and others I've yet to discover, to 'Marrianne', on Netflix, as well. They are premium horror.
'Marrianne' is superbly engrossing horror. A completely original take on that one person in your childhood small town who all the kids thought was a witch, or in my case, a creepy older father of older kids in my neighborhood, who we never saw, but of whom there were rumors and stories about. The character of Marrianne is superbly creepy and evil. I've yet to find out who the actress who plays her is, but I don't think I've ever seen a woman so convincingly embody evil as this actress has with only her face, no special effects by production except voice distortion. It is deeply disturbing, yet fun and addictive. One line related to growing up, of which that theme threads throughout this series, sticks with me "Things are perfect at age 12, then you break it". I was just mulling that same thing over, so true as it was in my life. I cried all through 7th grade, knowing, and yet not knowing the reason, which was that I could feel my childhood as it was was ending, and knew I would be leaving it behind soon, as I always was observant of people and human nature, (my greatest regret is not becoming a psychiatrist or the like) and saw, that year, the great difference and distance between 7th grade students, and the much more mature 8th grade students. Not really relevant here, as all the former town kids are now young adults, but thought the line was worth a mention, as the same theme of growing up as the characters are transitioning from young adulthood to full maturity, threads through the whole series. Must watch for fans of foreign slow burn horror. And this is truly slow burn, building and building, keeping you on your toes and guessing.
