According to an online survey in Canada, more than half of Canadians oppose the participation of their country in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Only 24 percent said that Canada “probably should not / definitely should not”, boycott, while twenty-one percent of the respondents said they were not sure. 2022 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, are scheduled to take place from 4 to 20 February 2022 in Beijing.
Human rights organizations had opposed Beijing winning the bid in 2015 itself, citing its human rights record and suppression of dissent. But a lot more has happened since then, including the crackdown on Hong Kong democracy protesters and the “genocide,” as some Western countries would like to call it in, in Xinjiang. Uyghur communities living in several Western countries are also calling for the boycott to send a powerful message to China.
Will many countries boycott, and even if they do, will it alter China’s behavior?
Unlikely, say experts. First, few countries will boycott as several have huge stakes in the Chinese economy, and if only a few do, it might end up emboldening China towards those countries and it can get aggressive against them. As for human rights, they are unlikely to improve just because of a few boycotts, even if they seem morally right.
Some countries may see the boycott as being unfair for their athletes.
China, for its part, maintains that we should keep the Olympics above politics and that the games will lead to a healthier, happier, more peaceful world. “Nowadays, it is one of the few positive factors in the world, and it should not be ruined by some senseless and aimless US politicians,” said an opinion piece in the Chinese government controlled Global Times, after a few U.S. Senators called on Joe Biden to boycott the Olympics.
