Robots can be employed to cater to the needs of elderly people. Studies show that there has been a significant improvement in mental health and this has a promising potential to reduce loneliness among the elderly.
The University of Bedfordshire, Middlesex University and Advinia Health Care, led by the University of Genova have conducted the first test by exploring the possibilities of developing 'culturally competent' robots.
This test was carried out in several elder care homes in the UK. Researchers found that Pepper, a culturally competent robot, was successful in achieving significant health improvement among older individuals who interacted with it up to 18 hours across two weeks.
The system recorded a small but positive impact on the elderlies' mental health and a positive attitude towards the robots.
